Download Quartus II and University Program
  1. First download the Quartus II package found at:
    1. http://dl.altera.com/?edition=web
      1. Select release 15.0
      2. Chose the tab “combined files”
      3. Chose your specific operation system (for these tutorials we will be using Windows 10)
      4. Click Download (you might have to download there downloading tool)
    2. After Downloading you should have a .tar file
  2. Next Download Altera University Program found at:
    1. https://www.altera.com/support/training/university/materials-software.tablet.html
      1. Click on “University Program Installer”
      2. Choose Quartus II version 15.0
      3. Download the .exe version for windows
      4. After Downloading you should have a .exe file

Note: you might have to create an account with Altera to download there software, this account is free.


Installing Quartus II
  1. Unzip the .tar file you downloaded in step 1 on the previous page (you can do this by using any means I will explain how to do this using 7zip; a free program)
    1. Download 7zip at:
      1. http://www.7-zip.org
      2. Choose the .exe version for windows
      3. Run the downloaded .exe to install 7zip
  2. Once 7zip is downloaded when you right click on the .tar file you should be able to see the option “7-Zip” --> Extract Files (click extract files)
    1. A pop up should display; choose where you want to unzip the files to
    2. Click ok
    3. A pop up will display the progress of this action, it might take a few minutes depending upon your system
    4. Once extraction is complete you should now have extracted files in the location you specified earlier
  3. Open the extracted folder you should see one folder named “components” and two files one readme.txt and setup.bat
  4. Click on setup.bat (accept any windows security pop-ups)
  5. This process can take some time depending upon your system
  6. An install windows should appear click next
  7. Accept the license agreement and click next
  8. For the installation directory it is best practice to choose “C:\altera\VERSION_NUMBER” in our case “C:\altera\15.0” There cannot be any spaces in any part of the file path.
  9. Click next
  10. Now choose the software you wish to install, if you only have one FPGA and only wish to use this software with that specific FPGA then select that, if you are learning or don’t know what FPGA you will have or have Multiple FPGA’s select all devices.
    1. You must select:
      1. “Quartus II Web Edition (free)”
      2. “Quartus II Software (includes Nios II EDS)
      3. Quartus II Help
      4. At least one Device ( in our case we selected all the devices)
      5. “ModelSim-Altera Starter Edition (free)”
    2. Click Next
  11. Click next to the summery
  12. Wait for the program to install (this can take some time depending on your system)
  13. Once finished you will be presented with final options as follows:
    1. Check Launch USB Blaster II driver installation
    2. Check Create Shortcuts on Desktop (if you want desktop shortcuts, if you do not want desktop shortcuts unchecked this box)
    3. Check Launch Quartus II
    4. Uncheck provide your feedback (unless you want to)
    5. Click finish
Installing USB Blaster Driver
  1. The USB Blaster driver installation should automatically start after clicking finish to the Quartus II installation
  2. The first screen of the Driver instantiation click next
  3. Click install to Windows Security pop up
  4. Click finish the driver should now be installed
  5. Quartus II should now launch for the first time
    1. Uncheck the sending Talkback data to Altera (if you wish to send Data back to Alter then leave this box checked)
    2. Click OK
    3. Select “Run the Quartus II software”
    4. Click OK
    5. Quartus II may or may not open, to check if everything is OK open quartus form the start menu, if it opens without any new pop-ups then you are good to go
Altera University Program Install
  1. Double click on the .exe we downloaded in step two on page 3
    1. This should launch the Altera university Program installer
  2. Click next to the first screen
  3. Click I Agree to the license agreement
  4. Make sure you install the software in the same directory you installed Quartus II to (in our case it was “C:\altera\15.0”)
  5. Click next
  6. Select “altera Monitor Program” and “Computer Systems”
  7. Click install
  8. Click yes to the pop up
  9. Altera University Program should now start to install
  10. Once done click next then click finish
